1893 Erard (Paris) 7' Parlor Grand
Erard pianos were considered one of the finest pianos in the world during the 19th century, competing with Bösendorfer as the most prestigious pianos in Europe. Numerous famous composers cherished Erards inlcuding Haydn, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Liszt, Rubinstein and Paderewski. Parisian Erards are very rare, especially in the U.S. Erards possess a very clean, open tone that generally is absent in overstrung American pianos.
This piano was recently acquired in very good original condition. The fallboard shows "Erard Paris" in inlaid brass set into the Rosewood. This elegant touch was common on some fine European pianos made during the 19th century-- the American pianos generally used a decal instead.
This piano will be receiving a thorough restoration including a complete action reconditioning, new tuning pins and new strings, and a gorgeous, French polish finish. We would never put modern hammers on a wonderful, rare piano like an Erard, as it would ruin the tone. Instead, the originals will be sent to Europe to be refelted. It has the original hand-carved music rack and pedal lyre. The brass pedals will be replated. The harp will be refinished as will the soundboard, making the piano look like new.
